Once a year in August, Helsing Junction Farm and K records put on a beautiful outdoor music festival. Mind you, some years it has rained and the shows were moved into the barn, but for the most part, it’s all camping and swimming and laying out on the grass watching the shows. The last couple years we played in the sobering Sunday morning light, but this year we got to play on Friday night which definitely had more of a party vibe.
It was fun to get together and see people and play and watch and listen. I really enjoyed seeing Inside Voices for the first time.-LAE

Heckfest, Anacortes, WA. July 17th, 18th, and 19th.
I especially enjoyed the new scenery at the wharf instead of city hall for the big shows. It is a really special thing to be at a show and to look down at your feet and see sparkling water through the floorboards. Kudos!
Personally, I was bummed the first couple days struggling with a sore throat. It’s messed up to have to avoid people and not hang out and talk at a music festival! So next time you think someone is avoiding you at a music festival, maybe they’re just trying to get over a sore throat!
LAKE played the last last set. The crowd was encouraging. Andrew did his Nelson character on stage for the first time. Eli was crackin’ jokes. Dirk and Phil were dancing with an American Flag at the sound board in the back of the room.
Monday morning, we all split and headed south for open-Mikrofest at Eli’s and my house. On the way we stopped at Ebey’s Prarie and did some shooting with Weston Currie. We were surprised to find Jim Morrison rocking rhymes in one of the bunkers.
What is your idea of a cool breakfast? For me, I think of a kitchen in Olympia where I have shared so many breakfasts with good company and listened to cool music. There was one time Evan Hashi, then resident of The Puget House, was playing a mixtape that he had found titled something like, “Sharon, I didn’t mean to hurt you. ” It featured mostly sappy early 90’s soul music that I might not have enjoyed had it not been arranged by this unknown person who had made a mixtape for a lady named Sharon. And this is exactly the sort of music that Adam Oelsner, member of LAKE, features in his music blog called Cool Breakfast. I don’t actually know where he got the name, but he did live at the Puget House at the time he created the blog, and I like thinking that I know these things. This house, usually called the Puget House, but also called Chez Puget, has been home at some point in time, to every member of LAKE, and there was even one point when we all lived there. It would have made sense to call it the LAKE house, but there was another house called The Lake House that we all knew well. But anyways, sometimes these breakfasts seemed to last all day, and I think it all goes back to the music. We’d get into the music, and then that music would lead to other music, and the day would go on, and people would come and go, but the food on the table would stay there all day, sometimes weeks. Now, that’s cool breakfast.

If you happen to be in Olympia this month, you should check out her photo installation at Northern, 321 5th Street, in downtown. She has a good website too: www.sarahcass.com.
This photo was taken at last’s year’s Helsing Junction music festival in Rochester, WA. We look forward to the next Helsing Junction coming up next month. We’re going to be releasing Let’s Build a Roof and Oh, the Places We’ll Go in Japan! Not individually, though. It’s going to have both albums on one CD. But anyways, this is great news that we’re going to be building a Japanese audience, and also that we might get to go to Japan sometime in the next year.
